A cornerstone of early U.S. coinage, the $10 Draped Bust Gold Eagle—often called the “Early Eagle”—was one of the original denominations authorized by the Coinage Act of 1792. It stood alongside the silver dollar as a foundational element of America’s young financial system. So pivotal was its role that all other gold denominations were valued in relation to it, either as fractions or multiples. Despite being authorized in 1792, minting did not begin until 1795 due to strict security and bonding protocols at the U.S. Mint. These large denomination coins were minted only upon request, resulting in extremely low annual production—typically under 10,000 coins through 1799. This limited mintage, combined with historical relevance and elegant design, makes Early Eagles both rare and highly sought after. More than just numismatic treasures, they are powerful symbols of the nation’s early ambition and identity.
