A true hallmark of early American coinage, the $10 Draped Bust Gold Eagle—commonly referred to as the “Early Eagle”—was one of the original denominations authorized by the Coinage Act of 1792. It played a vital role in the nation’s monetary system alongside the silver dollar. So central was its importance that all other gold denominations were measured in either fractions or multiples of this $10 standard. Although authorized in 1792, production didn’t commence until 1795 due to strict security and bonding protocols at the U.S. Mint. These high-denomination coins were minted only upon request, leading to extremely low production numbers—typically fewer than 10,000 coins annually through 1799. This limited mintage makes them incredibly rare and highly sought after. The Early Eagle is not just admired for its scarcity and elegant design, but also revered as a powerful symbol of America’s early identity and economic aspirations.
