A symbol of America’s early monetary history, the $10 Draped Bust Gold Eagle—nicknamed the “Early Eagle”—was among the original denominations authorized by the Coinage Act of 1792. Alongside the silver dollar, it served as a foundational piece of the young nation’s financial system. Its importance was such that all other gold denominations were valued in relation to it. Although the coin was authorized in 1792, production didn’t commence until 1795 due to stringent bonding and security requirements at the U.S. Mint. These large-denomination coins were struck only upon request, resulting in very limited mintages—typically fewer than 10,000 coins annually through 1799. This scarcity, coupled with historical importance and elegant design, makes Early Eagles highly prized by collectors. They are not merely numismatic treasures but enduring artifacts of a nation’s bold beginnings and identity.
