The $10 Draped Bust Gold Eagle—fondly known as the “Early Eagle”—is a cornerstone of early American coinage. Authorized by the Coinage Act of 1792, it was introduced as one of the country’s first gold denominations, alongside the silver dollar. Its significance was unmatched, as all other gold coins were valued in relation to it. Although approved in 1792, production was delayed until 1795 due to the strict security and bonding requirements at the U.S. Mint. These high-denomination coins were struck only upon request, resulting in very low mintages—typically fewer than 10,000 coins annually through 1799.
