A true icon of early American coinage, the $10 Draped Bust Gold Eagle—commonly referred to as the “Early Eagle”—was one of the first gold denominations authorized by the Coinage Act of 1792. Alongside the silver dollar, it served as a pillar of the nation’s early monetary system. So central was its role that all other gold coins were valued as fractions or multiples of this denomination. Though authorized in 1792, the first production did not begin until 1795 due to strict security and bonding requirements at the U.S. Mint. These large-denomination gold coins were struck only upon request, leading to extremely low mintages—typically fewer than 10,000 coins per year until 1799. Today, Early Eagles are prized not only for their rarity and classical design but also for their historical importance. They remain enduring relics of America’s founding economic vision and spirit.
