1854 Type 2 Gold Dollar – PCGS MS64
This 1854 Type 2 Gold Dollar has been certified and graded by PCGS as MS64. The PCGS encapsulation guarantees the coin’s authenticity and its Mint State 64 condition.
The gold dollar, often referred to as the one-dollar gold piece, was minted by the United States from 1849 to 1889. Throughout its lifespan, the coin saw three distinct design types—each created by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver James B. Longacre:
Type 1 (1849–1854): Liberty wearing a coronet
Type 2 (1854–1856): Liberty depicted as an Indian Princess
Type 3 (1856–1889): Larger Indian Princess head
This 1854 issue represents the Type 2 variety, known for its elegant yet short-lived design and slightly larger diameter than the Type 1.
