The gold dollar, commonly referred to as the one-dollar gold piece, was issued by the U.S. Mint from 1849 to 1889. Designed by Mint Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, the series features three distinct types over its lifespan:

  • Type 1 (1849–1854): Liberty wearing a coronet

  • Type 2 (1854–1856): Liberty depicted as an Indian Princess (this coin)

  • Type 3 (1856–1889): Indian Princess with a larger head

The Type 2 design introduced in 1854 was short-lived, making surviving examples—especially in Mint State grades—highly desirable among collectors.
