1855 Type 2 Gold Dollar – NGC MS64

This 1855 Type 2 Gold Dollar has been certified and graded by NGC as MS64. The NGC encapsulation ensures the coin’s authenticity and confirms its Mint State 64 condition.

The gold dollar—commonly referred to as the one-dollar gold piece—was minted by the United States from 1849 to 1889. Designed by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, the series went through three distinct design types:

  • Type 1 (1849–1854): Liberty wearing a coronet

  • Type 2 (1854–1856): Liberty as an Indian Princess (this coin)

  • Type 3 (1856–1889): Indian Princess with a larger head

The Type 2 variety, introduced in 1854, featured a more intricate depiction of Liberty as an Indian Princess and a slightly larger diameter. Its short production run and striking challenges make it a highly collectible design—especially in high Mint State grades like this MS64.
