1855 Type 2 Gold Dollar – PCGS MS64
This 1855 Type 2 Gold Dollar has been certified and graded by PCGS as MS64. The PCGS encapsulation guarantees the coin’s authenticity and its Mint State 64 condition.
The gold one-dollar piece, struck by the United States Mint from 1849 to 1889, is a classic of American numismatics. Designed by Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, the series features three distinct design types:
Type 1 (1849–1854): Liberty with a coronet
Type 2 (1854–1856): Liberty as an Indian Princess (this coin)
Type 3 (1856–1889): Indian Princess with a larger head
The Type 2 design, introduced in 1854, featured a more symbolic representation of Liberty as an Indian Princess. Its brief production run and delicate, often weak strikes make high-grade examples—such as this MS64—particularly desirable to collectors.
