The gold dollar, or one-dollar gold piece, was issued by the United States Mint from 1849 to 1889. Throughout its production, the coin underwent three major design changes:

  • Type 2 (1854–1856): Liberty depicted as an Indian Princess

  • Type 3 (1856–1889): Larger head design of the Indian Princess
