History of the American Silver Eagle

First released on November 24, 1986, the American Silver Eagle is the official silver bullion coin of the United States, struck exclusively in the one-troy-ounce size with a face value of $1. Each coin is guaranteed by the U.S. government to contain one troy ounce of 99.9% pure silver.

The obverse features Adolph A. Weinman’s classic Walking Liberty design, while the reverse—used through 2021—was designed by John Mercanti and features a Heraldic Eagle with a shield, clutching an olive branch and arrows, with 13 stars above representing the original colonies. The eagle also holds a banner inscribed with E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and 1 OZ FINE SILVER ~ ONE DOLLAR appear around the edge, along with Mercanti’s initials.
