History of the Gold American Buffalo
The Gold American Buffalo coin was introduced as a result of the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005. First minted in 2006, it became the U.S. Mint’s inaugural 24-karat (.9999 fine) gold coin.
Each year, the Mint releases both a bullion version and a limited number of “Proof” coins, renowned for their mirror-like finish and superior detail. Only a select few of these Proof coins are awarded a perfect grade of Proof 70 by leading grading services such as NGC.
In 2008, the series was expanded to include four fractional sizes—marking the only year these were produced—featuring face values of $50 (1 oz), $25 (1/2 oz), $10 (1/4 oz), and $5 (1/10 oz). These fractional coins are especially prized by collectors for their rarity.
