Overview

The 2022 Gold American Eagle Proof Set marks the second year of Jennie Norris’s updated reverse design, introduced in 2021. Norris, a U.S. Mint Artistic Infusion Program artist, created a bold and intimate close-up of the American eagle, replacing the long-standing “family of eagles” scene by Miley Busiek.

Her inspiration came from years of work as a volunteer raptor handler and a lifelong respect for wildlife. As Norris explained: “The American Eagle is such a noble bird. I was hoping to capture the intensity of his stare through the close cropping. His gaze speaks of pride and wisdom passed down through generations of time.” The design’s realism and detail bring the eagle to life, giving the impression of a living, breathing symbol of American heritage.

Reverse Design Details

The reverse is framed by traditional Gold American Eagle inscriptions:

• Top: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”

• Bottom: Denomination, weight, and gold purity (specific to each coin)

• Sides: Three five-pointed stars on both the right and left, separating the top and bottom inscriptions

• Above the eagle: The mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM” (“Out of many, one”) and “IN GOD WE TRUST”

• Designer’s initials: Below the eagle’s neck

• Sculptor’s initials: Above the portrait

Obverse Design Details

The obverse continues to showcase Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ iconic 1907 design of Lady Liberty. Liberty strides forward with flowing hair and gown, holding a torch aloft in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The U.S. Capitol appears in the background while a radiant sunrise brightens the horizon, symbolizing freedom, progress, and renewal.
