Overview
The 2023 Gold American Eagle Proof Set marks the third year of the redesigned reverse created by Jennie Norris, a U.S. Mint Artistic Infusion Program artist. Her design presents a powerful, close-up portrait of an American eagle, offering a striking contrast to Miley Busiek’s original family-of-eagles motif.
Drawing on her experience as a raptor handler and her deep connection to wildlife, Norris explained her goal: “The American Eagle is such a noble bird. I was hoping to capture the intensity of his stare through the close cropping. His gaze speaks of pride and wisdom passed down through generations of time.” The design’s detail and realism bring the bird to life, giving viewers the sense of a living, breathing symbol of American strength.

Obverse Design Details
The obverse retains Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ legendary 1907 design of Lady Liberty, first used on the $20 Double Eagle. Liberty strides confidently forward, her hair and gown flowing in the wind. She holds a torch high in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. In the background, the U.S. Capitol rests on the horizon beneath a radiant rising sun, symbolizing renewal, freedom, and progress.
