1854 Type 2 Gold Dollar – NGC MS62
This 1854 Type 2 Gold Dollar has been certified and graded by NGC as MS62. The NGC encapsulation guarantees the coin’s authenticity and its Mint State 62 condition.
The gold dollar—also known as the one-dollar gold piece—was struck by the United States Mint from 1849 to 1889. Designed by Mint Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, the coin was produced in three distinct types during its lifespan:
Type 1 (1849–1854): Liberty wearing a coronet
Type 2 (1854–1856): Liberty depicted as an Indian Princess (this coin)
Type 3 (1856–1889): Indian Princess with a larger head
The Type 2 variety, introduced in 1854, features a more intricate and symbolic portrait of Liberty but was only minted for a short time due to striking issues, making it especially desirable among collectors.
