The gold dollar, often referred to as the one-dollar gold piece, was minted by the United States from 1849 to 1889. Throughout its lifespan, the coin saw three distinct design types—each created by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver James B. Longacre:

  • Type 1 (1849–1854): Liberty wearing a coronet

  • Type 2 (1854–1856): Liberty depicted as an Indian Princess

  • Type 3 (1856–1889): Larger Indian Princess head

This 1854 issue represents the Type 2 variety, known for its elegant yet short-lived design and slightly larger diameter than the Type 1.
